Martin Nachbar, born in 1971, is
dancer/choreographer. 1989 he was a founding member of Entschwartete Kunst, a visual arts and performance group in
Düsseldorf, Germany. At the same time he played bass in several bands.
In 1991, Nachbar started to dance. From 1992 to 1996, he studied at the School for New Dance Development, Amsterdam, and, in 1998, at P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels. 1995 he received a scholarship of the Nuffic-foundation to study and work in New York City.
From 1996 to 1998, he worked with Hans v.d. Broeck of
Les Ballets C. de la B., Gent, among others. At the same time he made
Photographic Memory and Corrupt Patience, two solo performances produced
and shown in Amsterdam. In 1999 Thomas Plischke, Alice Chaucat and he founded
the collective B.D.C. who made
several pieces, among which is affects/rework.
For this, Nachbar reconstructed Affectos
Humanos by Dore Hoyer. He described this process in two articles (for ballettanz, Berlin, and for etcetera,, Brussels) and in a lecture
performance called ReConstruct
respectively Urheben Aufheben /
ReConstruct Revisited. In spring 2001 B.D.C.
worked with the youth dance group Etnica
in the favela da Andarai in Rio de Janeiro.
He has participated in several hybrid events as
co-organiser, performer, lecturer, and teacher, such as B.D.C. & friends in March 2001 at the Beursschouwburg,
Brussels, Reden über Bewegung at
the Theater am Halleschen Ufer in May 2003, or Context at Hebbel am Ufer in February 2004.
In 2001 he collaborated with Vera Mantero for um estar aqui cheio. In 2002, Nachbar
was choreographer for Schreibstück
(author: Thomas Lehmen) and worked with Lilia Mestre (Brussels/Lisbon). In
2003, Nachbar made Solo and Ausflug, the first being a dance solo
around a fictitious dancers cv, the latter being a piece that sells itself. In
November 2003, he made the duet ja, ja
der dritte mann based on the
working methods and life of the Austrian poet Ernst Jandl. Just before, he had
been collaborating with Thomas Lehmen for his new project Stationen, which was premiered in October 2003. In spring 2004, he
has danced for Jochen Rollers latest project mindgarden. In October 2004, he worked with composer Benjamin
Schweitzer on an improvised event with three dancers and five musicians, called
anordnen/verschieben, which was
premiered in Dresden.
In December 2004, Martin Nachbar has premiered his new
solo Covert Investigation at hau 3,
Berlin. Currently, he is co-curator of mode05
meeting on dance education 2005. In September 2005, Nachbar and Jochen
Roller will premier their duet menmonic
non-stop.
